Teachers' Pages Sample Lesson 1

January 23, 2008

Comments with a hyphen in front of them are optional, usually mentioned only if the student is having difficulty following the regular instruction.

I'll be glad to help you. Please walk here to me. :)

- Just turn in a little circle until you see my name up on the screen, then walk toward me. :) You can use the ctrl key as you walk, to "run".

There are "teaching area signs" here, near me. Point your mouse at the words, "Teaching area 4" and leftclick it. I'll meet you there.

- Are you righthanded - using a mouse for righthanded people?

- ok, since yours is lefthanded, you'll need to do the opposite clicks of what I'll be saying..when I say "rightclick", you will need to leftclick. ok?

Ok, :) We're still in AWSchool world - we just "teleported" to a new spot here.

If you have trouble walking, hit the big minus key at far right of your keyboard once, to be sure your feet are firmly on the ground, then try walking again.

Please walk to me and stand beside me - facing the same direction I'm facing.

I'm going to be using a copy/paste lesson that I give a lot...it's going to sound kinda' "canned", but it saves making you wait while I type stuff. :)

But you don't have to rush..take your time doing the things. I'll always wait to see that you have done it. :)

Let's get your screen organized first. Be sure you have the NumLock key turned off (NumLock light should not be glowing on your keyboard.) Tell me when it's "off".

If a webpage window is showing at the right of your screen, we want it off. (Click Show at top of screen and then UNcheck the word "web".) Tell me when the webpage is gone.

Drag the top edge of this chat window up or down, so that you can see 6 or 7 lines of chat at a time. Tell me "Done" when you've got it that way :)

Click Options-Settings-Chat (at top of screen.) Do two things: Click the box for "display chat above avatars" to remove the dot from it. Then click the box for "log chat to chat.txt" - to put a dot for it. Click "ok" and tell me when you're done.

Later after you exit from this program, you can re-read the lesson by doing a "file find" in your computer for the file named: chat.txt

Now, do you see a little black/white checkered wall way out in front of us?

- Hit the Home key up near your backspace key, so that you can see things better. Don't use the view that lets you see yourself in here.

Rightclick the checkered wall..an Object Properties window will pop up. You need to drag that new window to the upper left of your screen. Then close the Object properties and say "done" when its closed. (If you have trouble dragging it, tell me.)

- Is the Object properties window still showing on your screen?

- Rightclick the checkered wall so that the Obj Prop window will pop open again.

- Point at the words "Object properties" at the top of that window...leftclick those words, then hold the left mouse button down while you drag that window to the upper left of your screen. Then tell me "done" when you've closed it.

Good :) Now you're ready to start actually building. The keyboard keys we'll be using for building are the Insert key (up near the backspace key) and the little group of 4 arrow keys near the Ctrl key. Do you see those keys ok on your keyboard?

Rightclick the checkered wall (the Obj Prop window will pop open) then hit the Insert key on your keyboard one time. Then hit the down-arrow key on your keyboard about 30 times..to move a copy of the wall to us. Then close the Object Properties.

- If you got a message from the "Building Inspector", tell me which word was in the message ... can't "change" or can't "encroach"...which word?

- A message saying: "can't change someone else's property", means you were trying to move the original wall. You didn't press Insert to make your own copy of it first. (Insert makes a copy of the object...the copy is then "yours" to move here).

- A message saying: "cannot encroach", means you closed the Object Properties window while your copy of the wall was touching something that belongs to someone else. You didn't move your copy to a clear spot. Try it again, by doing this:

- Rightclick the checkered wall, then press the Insert key (near the Backspace key) on your keyboard one time. Then press the down-arrow key on your keyboard about 30 times..to move the wall to us. Then close the Object Properties window.

Good..you did it! The copy you made of that wall is called your "starter object" :) And you moved it here to bare ground where it isn't touching ("encroaching" on) objects that belong to anyone else.

- now..rightclick your wall (no Insert this time) and move it closer to us..then close the Object properties window.

- Good. Now, let's move ourselves back a little ..so we can see your wall clearly. Just walk backwards a little.

From here on, if anything I tell you to do results in the object disappearing or a tiny black triangle that just stays sitting on the ground, be sure to tell me.

Now, lets change your wall into something else. Rightclick your wall and erase the word "wall031.rwx" from the Object box. Then type this for the Object name: walk001.rwx and then close the window. (Be sure to type walk..not wall.)

- A message saying: "can't use unregistered objects" means you spelled the Object name wrong when you typed it into the Object name..try it again, by doing this:

- Rightclick your wall and erase the word "wall031.rwx" from the Object box. Then type this for the Object name: walk001.rwx (be sure to type walk, not wall. Those are zeros in the number). Then close the window.

WHITE FLOOR APPEARS:

Very good! Can you see a big white speckled floor here now, where your little wall was?

Now let's add a big wall to your floor..

Rightclick your floor, press the Insert key on your keyboard once, then press the down-arrow key on your keyboard once. Erase the word "walk001.rwx" in the Object box and type in: pp04.rwx (that's a zero in "pp04.rwx") Then close the window.

- What do you see now where your floor was?

- OK, rightclick it, press the Insert key on your keyboard once, then press the down-arrow key on your keyboard once. Erase the whole word that ends in .rwx in the Object box and type this: walk001.rwx then close the window.

- Good, now instead of just changing the floor to something else, let's add a wall, so do this: rightclick your floor, hit the Insert key on your keyboard to make an extra copy. Change the Object name to pp04.rwx (that's a zero) And close the window.

Can you see a big tan wall now? Sitting on your floor?

Good! :) Now rightclick your wall (no Insert) and move it away from you with 7 or 8 slow clicks of the up-arrow key on your keyboard..to put the wall on the back edge of the floor. Then close the window.

- You can walk closer to your wall to see if it's sitting on the edge of the floor. If it's not, rightclick it (no Insert) and use very slow clicks of your arrow keys to move it exactly onto the edge of the floor.

- That's perfect :) Now walk back to stand beside me again, please.

ok..now rightclick your wall and move it to the left or right, exactly 4 slow clicks..to get the wall to the corner of the floor. Then close the window.

In case you wonder...I don't get to see the wall move, _while_ you are moving it. That's why there'll be a delay before I tell you you've done something right. I never see the result until after you close the window.

- It still needs to be moved one or two clicks. Rightclick the wall and move it just one or two slow clicks, to put it on the edge of the floor, then close the window.

Now we'll make an extra wall, to finish that side. We're going to use a formula for making the copy..so do these steps exactly:

Make a copy by Rightclicking your wall, then hit the Insert key on your keyboard one time, then press the down-arrow key on your keyboard one time. Move the copy exactly 8 slow clicks to the side, along the floor..& close window.

Perfect :) Now don't make any more walls. Hang on a sec, while I tell you about this:

Insert key does make a copy (a duplicate). You can't see the copy since it overlaps the original. But, Insert always makes the copy jump one click away from you. After using Insert you ALWAYS need to give it one click of the down-arrow key.

So, whenever you make a copy, always think of this formula: "Rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once". That will line it up perfectly before you do anything else to it.

Ok, now, we're going to make a corner and we'll use a new key to turn it.

Copy one of the walls (Rightclick, Insert, down-arrow key one time)...then turn it with EXACTLY 6 slow clicks of the PageUp key (about one click per second). Then close the window.

6 slow clicks of the PageUp key will always make a perfect right-angle turn, even if it might look crooked to you. Then you can move the wall to the edge of the floor with ARROW keys only..NEVER any more PageUp or PageDown, even if it looks crooked.

- This corner is not ever going to fit. Probably it looked crooked to you and you tried to correct it with more PageUp or PageDown and then moved it some more. You have to trust the 6 slow clicks of PageUp to make a perfect right-angle turn.

- If you mix arrow key movements in between PageUp/PageDown movements, things never will fit. So, delete the new wall (rightclick it and hit your keyboard "delete" key) and try it again. :)

- Copy one of the walls (Rightclick, Insert, down-arrow key one time)...then turn it with EXACTLY 6 slow clicks of the PageUp key (about one click per second). Then close the window.

Perfect! Now, please come stand beside me again.

See how your new wall sticks out behind? That's normal, after you rotate a copy. Rightclick the wall that sticks out and move it with arrow keys only...to form the corner. Then close the window.

Beautiful! You have a good eye for this work. :)

Now make one more panel for the side the newest wall is on. Copy your new wall (rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once).... then move it with arrow keys only. Then close the window.

Good. Let's make the floor wider now.

Make a copy of the floor (rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once), and move the copy 16 slow clicks, so that the floor is twice as wide as it is now...it will be made of two pieces of floor instead of just one. And then close the window.

- Your second piece of floor is still overlapping the first floor a little bit. Move your second piece further (no Insert..just move it with arrow keys.) Move it "too far" until you you can see a gap of green ground between them, then move it back.

Perfect :) Now make more walls over there to finish that side. Remember to use the formula for making each copy: (Rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once)..then move the new wall into place, and close the window.

Great! Make another corner now, at the new end of the house. Rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once..then turn the copy with 6 slow clicks of the PageUp key, and then move it into place with just arrow keys. (And close the window).

Even if you think the corner fits, its good to walk behind it again to see if the new wall needs to be moved more..with arrow keys only - (never any more pageup or pagedown) Always check to see if the corner is perfect.

Excellent..now make one more panel for the end of the house. (Rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once....then move it (and close the window).

Wonderful! :-) You are doing a really good job.

Now, don't make any more walls. Leave one whole side of the house open and come stand beside me. We're going to make a flat roof. Do you see the big + key at far right of your keyboard..in the numbers keypad at far right?

- LAPTOP USERS - RAISING

- Rightclick the floor, "Insert, down-arrow key". Then point your mouse at the icon button that points UP, in the Object Properties window and leftclick that button repeatedly to raise the copy of the floor to the top of the wall. Then close the window

REGULAR COMPUTER USERS - RAISING:

ok..make a copy of the floor with the formula: "rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once. Then hit the plus key (+) 8 times..slowly.. to raise the copy of the floor up to the top of the walls to make a flat roof. And close the window.

- use the big + key in the big numbers keypad at far right of keyboard.

- That's the idea, but it's out of line, so let's delete this roof piece and try again. Rightclick your new roof piece and hit the Delete key on your keyboard.

- Now,make a copy of the floor with the formula: "rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once". Then hit the plus key (+) 8 times..slowly.. to raise the copy of the floor up to the top of the walls. And close the window.

Perfect..now do the same with the other floor piece.. copy it with rightclick, insert, down-arrow once..then lift it with 8 slow clicks of the + key.

It's normal for tiny hairline cracks to show where seams meet. The tiny cracks appear and disappear as you walk around. Looking good! :)

Now,let's still leave the front of your house open so you can put in some furniture. This is the fun part. :)

For these next things, if you get a message saying: "use only registered objects" that means you spelled the Object name wrong. If that happens, just try it again.

Make a copy of a floor (Rightclick the floor, Insert once, down arrow once) then change the Object name to couhat01.rwx and close the window. (That's a zero in the number).

Very good! :) Now, you can rightclick the couch to move it where you want it with arrow keys (and use the pageup or pagedown keys if you want to turn the couch). Then close the window.

Now..make a copy of the floor again (rightclick, insert, down-arrow once) and change the name to table1.rwx and close the window.

You can walk in there to see it better before you move it. It's ok to stand in there while you move things. :-)

Do you have a pencil and paper handy?

Visiting an Object yard (supply yard) is the best place to find names of all the objects. Write these coordinates down on a piece of paper: AW 1096n 988w That's where the big object yard is in Alphaworld - called just AW world in your worlds list.

- That's the big object yard in this world (Alphaworld). This world is called just AW in your worlds list.

Also, a list of all the AW world objects is on a website at http://objects.activeworlds.com/aw/models/ but the object yard is the best place to actually see the supplies and get the names.

Now, for a bed.. copy the floor, then change it's name to bed01.rwx and close the window. Then rightclick the bed and move it where you want it.

Do you know how to drag the mouse across a line in this chat window and use Ctrl c to copy (and Ctrl v to paste)? Try it..copy a few words in this chat window here and then paste them to say to me. I'll wait while you try it right now.

- That's ok, you can try that some other time. We'll go on with the building :-)

- To copy a words from this chat window..point at the first letter of a line you want to copy and leftclick to make a typing cursor appear. While holding down the left mouse button, drag your mouse along the line then release the mouse button.

- While the line is highlighted, hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter c (for copy). Then release the Ctrl and the c. You won't see anything happen when you do a "Ctrl+c" but it copies the highlighted words.

- Now leftclick one time in the box where you type when you are chatting. Hold down the Ctrl key and hit the letter "v" one time. That will paste what you copied into the chat window. Hit Enter so I can see it, too.

Good, that will save typing or writing, when you want to copy long commands. Just copy the words with Ctrl c and then paste them into the Object Properties window with Ctrl v.

Rightclick your bed...then put this next long sentence in the ACTION line of the bed (not in the Object name area) and then close the window:

create texture xarid1

- You need the whole command (beginning with the word "create") to make it work. The whole command must look exactly like this: create texture xarid1

Cool! :) You can walk closer to examine the new color. It's really a little picture, called a "texture". But when it is used on furniture, it spreads over the shape of the furniture.

Now,try this one in the Action line of your couch or bed:
create texture jeans2

There are hundreds of color patterns you can use in the Action line of your furniture. To see them, just look in the "textures" section of the object yard.

And here's a new kind of command, for solid colors. In the action line of the ceiling, put:

create color white

"create texture" (like on the bed) makes a color AND a pattern. To make just a solid color you use: create color red (or you can use HTML color numbers like: create color 008080 )

Now, let's hang a picture on the wall :)

Copy the floor (Rightclick, Insert, down-arrow once), then change the name to pict4.rwx The front side of the frame will be sparkly, like a tv, the back side will be plain gray.

You can move it near a wall with arrow keys..and if you want to turn it..use pageup or pagedown (6 slow clicks for a right angle turn)...then lift it up on the wall with the + key

- That's the backside of the picture frame...turn it all the way around with 12 clicks of the pageup key. We need to see the sparkly screen side of it.

Good. Now, to put a built-in AW picture on it, rightclick the picture (no insert), and in the Action line put:

create texture zsat

You can also use pictures from websites. Make another picture frame up there and we'll try a website picture. Copy your Saturn picture, (rightclick, insert, downarrow once)then move the copy somewhere along a wall.

Now, erase the Action line of the new pic & put this into the action line and be sure to include the word "create":

create picture tnlc.com/images/tiger1.jpg

(say this to students who can't use copy/paste and are typing the commands)
- that's a small L in tnlc.com

- The line has to begin with "create picture". Write it in the Action line like this: create picture tnlc.com/images/tiger1.jpg

You can use any picture from any website on the internet with the "create picture" command on some objects. It does have to be a .jpg though..can't be a .gif. And the picture has to be on a website somewhere; can't just be in your computer.

Now stand against your wall so that you can see the space between the picture and the wall. To move the picture closer to the wall, hold down the shift key while you move the picture. 10 shift clicks = one regular click.

Keep the picture at least 3 shift clicks out from the wall so that the wall doesn't bleed through the picture.

Shift clicks are useful for minor adjustments of things like furniture, but never, NEVER use shift clicks while building the main parts of your house, like the walls, roofs, floors or you'll get the whole building out of line.

Ok, let's fix the front of your house with windows and a doorway. Please stand beside me, facing the open front.

Copy a back wall with "rightclick, insert, down-arrow once"..then move it out to the front edge. Make more walls across the open front, so that your room is completely closed.

Remember,it's normal for tiny hairline cracks to appear and disappear as you walk around...don't worry about the little cracks.

Perfect! Now rightclick one of your new walls (no Insert). Just change the Object name from pp04.rwx to pw04.rwx (w is for "window") and close the Object properties window.

Good..rightclick another panel, and change it's name to pd04.rwx (d for "door") and close the Object properties window.

Now let's make a sign for your house. Rightclick any panel, copy it (with Insert, down-arrow once), and then move it out here to us and close the Obj prop window.

Now..change the Object name to: sign1.rwx Then..in the Action line, type only these two words: create sign (and close the window)

Good..now, rightclick the sign again, and in the Description line (a new place), type whatever you want to say, like: My Cool House

To change the color of the sign...change the Action line to read like this: create sign color=red bcolor=black

You can change the color of the walls of your house by changing the number. We made this house with the "04" panels. Try changing some of them to 01 through 32 to see other wall colors. (pp01.rwx, pp02.rwx, etc)

If any of the new numbers you try cause the wall or floor to disappear and become just a tiny black triangle sitting on the ground, rightclick the triangle and try a new number.

If you can't get a new wall or floor color to show up after trying different numbers, that means you need to make a quick trip to the Object Yard to walk around and let those things automatically load into your computer's cache.

You did a super good job! :) Now, since this AWSchool world is a teaching/practice world, your house here will be deleted by other teachers to keep the areas open. You're welcome to keep practicing in this world as much as you wish, but work does get deleted in here.

The best world for you to build in is called AW in the worlds list. Other worlds you can build in are Yellow, Winter, COFmeta, Mars, Atlantis, Nova and quite a few more.

I'd suggest building in AW world (Alphaworld). The same objects you've been practicing with here are available in AW world in the object yard at AW 1096n 988w.

If you have trouble finding bare land to build on in AW world, just ask some of the people you will see at the Object Yard if they will help you find land to build on. Most of the people using the object yard would love to have a neighbor building close to them.

You did great! Those are the basics. Enjoyed meeting you. I have to go now..hope you have fun building. :)

-------- TELEPORTING TO AW WORLD -----------

Look at the upper left of your browser. Next to the word "File" do you have the word "Teleport" or do you have the word "World"? Which word is next to "File"?

- Leftclick the word "World" (up near the word File) at top of your screen, then leftclick "To"

- Leftclick the word "Teleport" (up near the word File) at top of your screen, then leftclick "To"

Be sure you erase "awschool" from the world name box and put just AW in the world name box. Then type this in the Coordinates box:

--------- USING AN OBJECT YARD ---------

When you want to find things for to build with, Teleport To AW 1096n 988w (the Supply Yard for alphaworld).

Keep a pencil and paper handy. When you see something you like in the object yard (or anywhere), rightclick the object and write down the name of the Object.

Also write down whatever is in the Action line (if anything). But leave the description line blank. The descrip is filled in on objects in the object yard only so people can hold their mouse over the object to read the name without rightclicking.

Then when you get back to your house, just type that object name (and action line, if any) on one of your own objects. That will change your object into the new thing. Don't fill in description lines except on a sign or a mailbox.

That's all! :) Unless you have some questions, I'm going to leave you now. Have fun...you did great! :)

________FOR REGISTERED CITIZENS, NOT FOR TOURISTS

Now..here's something important, for when you begin building in AW world (AlphaWorld) or anywhere, for that matter. This is really the "first step" you should do in building, but it would have been too boring for you to have started with this..

It's called "covering your land".

When you find land in AW world, copy something (with rightclick, insert), move it to your clear spot where it doesn't touch anything belonging to anyone else, then change the name of it to landa.rwx or walk029h.rwx

Then keep copying your piece of grass until you have a big area covered with grass...like wall-to-wall carpet...no gaps & no overlapping. That's the way you "claim land"..by covering it completely. Then no one can put an object on it except you.

If you leave even one tiny strip of bare land, anyone can stick a sign there, or a wall, or picture...and you can't remove it. Any bare strip or spot that you leave on the land you want to "claim" can be used by anyone. So cover every inch of it.

(Have the student build a few pieces of grass. If they are using 3.1, show them how to use Ctrl Insert.)
