Teachers' Pages Communication

January 23, 2008

These are not hard fast rules, but just some ideas to get you thinking of other possible ways to handle situations.
"Greetings scripts" vers free hand. I do like a good script, but lets not over do it. Announcing your self when you enter as being a Teacher ect. is a good thing. But repeated announcements, and flooding the screen is not necessary. A friendly "Hello" can do wonders
:o) Other ways to enter Ground Zero include "Enter and Freeze", here you enter ground zero and get a feeling of whats going on before you talk. Are there many teachers or TA's present? Is someone in the middle of explaining something?
Who is the main teacher here? The one that is answering the questions and seems to be doing the greeting of new people as they enter.
Who is using bolds?
(In whispers) Introduce yourself, offer your help
:o) "Hi there I'm Suzy, I am a teachers Aide, do you need me to help out?"
This helps keep the confusion down and also answers questions as to who you are.
I prefer the enter and freeze myself. It allows you to get a feel of whats going on. Before you start talking.
At those times when we have multi Teachers on duty, let people do their jobs.
If a Teacher looks like they are having too many questions thrown at them, then I will step in. Best way to do this is to let the TG know.
"I've Got Greta"
Then whisper to the person your going to help.
"Hi Greta, I'm a teacher here, I can help you with that."
Be aware that it can be confusing when several people try and help one person. If you see that someone is attempting to help respect that person and don't take over. If you have a suggestion whisper it to them.
When to use bolds, when not to....

  • When you enter ground zeroand you see someone has bolds on. Chances are that person has been helping people and has the feel for things.
  • This may be a time when you don't want your bolds on.
  • You only have 30 minutes and cant get too involved. Leave bolds off.
  • Once you take a student to a teaching area, by all means turn that bold on. This will let others know when they enter that teaching area that a lesson is going on.

Now a few words about those slow times
:-) Those times you enter ground zero and there are 4 AWSchool staff there but no students.
Great times to catch up on things, get to know the other staff and have a little fun.
Be careful how involved you get with your talking. Keep your eye on ground zero. Your main purpose as AWSchool staff is to assist people. When you see people enter, slow it down and see if it's a new student.
Really looks bad when someone comes for help and there are staff present and they miss the question.
This is an area that the Administration look at. As staff of this school your duty is to help. Please don't get side tracked. It really is not a good thing when people see all the staff talking and no one is paying attention to the person with problems.
The school can very quickly get a bad name. Believe me on this one. I have heard the comments.
This will effect your promotions and possible advancement.
Now to those trouble makers!! Yes, those people that make our jobs difficult.
!!!LOG ALL CHAT!!!!
Watch for trouble makers. At the first sign be ready. What are some common reasons people act badly? Ask your self questions.
  • Is this a new person that dosen't understand the rules?
  • Does this person not speak English very well?
  • Has this person had a bad experience with the school before?
  • Bad time at home?
  • Can you talk them around?

Dont always look for the bad. Use your communication skills. Calling a teacher to eject or doing an eject should be the last resort not the first.
1st technique/ try to talk the person around. Simple warning in a kind way.
" Hey there "Stucky", please don't talk that way, there are kids around and you may be ejected
"Is there a problem I can help you with?"
" WOW you sound real mad, Bad day?"
"are you new to AW?"
2nd technique/ divert their attention
Fast talker
"Is there a problem I can help you with"
" WOW you sound real mad, Bad day?"
"are you new to AW?"
"where are you from?" "really! WOW neat! I'm from california"
"how old are you? Have you seen AW teen? Cool place"
"Have you done any building? It's real fun!!"
Just keep on rolling, talk about anything that you can get the person to talk about. Dont focus on the bad behavior.
Call for help if you need it, Let the Teacher know what your doing. Always helps to have back up on stand by.
